To TV, or Not to TV...Oh What a Question

Well Hellooooo...

So, I know I had all these grand plans to actually be back on my blogging game in the past couple weeks  few weeks month but I have no excuses, I am just a really busy slacker.  It was so nice to just sit in my new condo today and do nothing except laundry and play on the internet.  Oh internet, my long lost lover, how I have missed you.

The comcast guy finally came last week and we were able to get the internet and TV running before we actually moved in 2 days ago (seriously! moving in was long overdue but there were issues that kept us out...like our stuff deciding not to show up on time).  So I am at work last Sunday, excited because I know we are finally going to get our stuff put together and have the TV on the correct side of the room because we were going to have the cable outlet moved and my husband calls me to tell me the comcast guy wants to drill a hole in our brand new hardwood floor and shove the cable wire through it.

Ummmm....WHAT?!  Ok cable guy, I'm sure you're nice and all but put the drill down nice and easy and step away from my hardwood!  Thank God my husband had enough sense to call me before I had to cry.  So after all that they still charged us for the outlet move when he said he couldn't do because he didn't have the right tools to put it in the wall like a normal outlet.  Add that to the other charges they didn't tell us about and the annoying set up of the DVR and I am about ready to give up on TV all together.

Here is where I need the advice folks.  I am seriously considering getting rid of my cable and just keeping the internet and the idea scares the crap out of me because I LOVE MY TV! But then I think about the money I will save and all the reading I will have time for with my adorable library so close.  Is there anyone out there who actually doesn't have TV because I seriously need to know how you live and if I can do it.

We only have the free "new rabbit ears" and so we get all of the local stuff. Get a $7 a month subscription to Netflix and a call it a day. Since doing this we have stopped buying mad volumes of DVD's and we also feel like we have cable. All the instant stuff goes right through your Wii, and you still will save around $30ish dollars a month!

Jess,
Your old buddy Stew and his wife are TV free. We only have internet and just rent RedBox movies...granted, we're not hooked on any crazy TV shows like Lost or anything. If we were though we'd just wait for the season collections to come out. But we are patient weirdos like that. Glad to know that you are moved in; we miss you guys.

When I stopped having cable, I missed it, but not unbearably. I missed What Not to Wear and being able to watch my university's smaller football games on ESPN. But overall, it's fine without cable, as long as you prepare yourself for the possibility of a brief withdrawal period. There are network TV shows in the evenings, and DVDs for all the other times you feel like vegging out. :) At least that has been my experience.

when we bought our house 10 years ago (8/19/00), we didn't have cable installed. we have been tv-free for all this time and have lived to tell the tale! we do have netflix and can watch movies but if you turn on our tv it's just snow.

i do watch a few shows when i visit my sister--the barefoot contessa, paula deen, pawn stars, and american pickers.

you really can live with out tv--my hubby and i were junkies and we went cold turkey.

If you are hooked on certain TV shows, remember that most of them can be watched online. You might have to wait a couple of days after the original air date, but still it's available.

Joining the chorus here- I was cable-free for 6 months and did not miss any of it. I only gave into my son when he begged for cable to watch his sports shows. I had more money and more time otherwise. It's a win-win situation as far as I'm concerned. And who doesn't want more time for books????

Well, I don't know that I can help much (we have some crazy full package so my husband can watch arcane sports on channels I never knew we had) but I can say that I don't watch it much anymore --- on purpose --- and have really been enjoying my extra time. I do sometimes miss it, but once you get past the initial shock, it's all good.
